Wimbledon 2008!
Wimbledon 2008
Pinstickers Guide
Top ten women's seeded

Ana Ivanovic (SRB)

Ivanovic

Fresh off of her first career Grand Slam title, Ivanovic has got to be one of the fav's to win Wimbledon. Pulling off this double is much harder said than done though. She has the game to win here, but the Williams’ sisters, Sharapova, and Jankovic will have something to say about that. She was humbled in the finals of the 2007 French Open and the 2008 Australian Open, so to win here she needs to stay mentally strong

Pre tourney Odds: 4/1 Paddy Power!

Jelena Jankovic (SRB)

Jankovic

Sports are a game of inches. An inch here or an inch there and things might turn out different. Jankovic still has a couple of inches to go before she becomes a Grand Slam champion. If she had beaten Ivanovic at the French Open, she would have become the number one ranked player! To get there, she is going to have to become more offensive during the crucial points. She cannot pray and hope that her opponent is going to miss; she must take it to them!

Pre tourney Odds: 9/1 Paddy Power!

Maria Sharapova (RUS)

Sharapova

We all know Sharapova can play on the grass, as she is a former champion here (2004). Her relentless attacking style makes her extremely dangerous, and you can bet your bowl of strawberries and cream that she is going to be around late in the second week. Her chances of winning this tournament are very good, and dont be surprised to see her back at the top of the rankings at the end of the fortnight.

Pre tourney Odds: 11/5 Paddy Power!

Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)

Kuznetsova

It’s hard to believe it, but Kuznetsova hasn’t won a title since August 2007 at New Haven and her opponent retired in the second set in that match. Despite that, you can always count on seeing Kuznetsova around deep in tournaments. Looking good in the semis at the French Open, Kuznetsova had a very good chance of winning that title, but Safina was just too much for her there. Her excellent athletic base makes her extremely tough to beat, but she needs to add some variety to her game to have a chance at winning another Grand Slam title.

Pre tourney Odds: 25/1 Paddy Power!

Elena Dementieva (RUS)

Dementieva

Dementieva reached the quarterfinals here back in 2006, which is her best result in nine previous appearances. At this point in her career, her serve is not a huge weakness anymore. Her groundstrokes are excellent, and she is like a brick wall because she gets everything back! Despite being ranked so high, she is often overlooked when it comes to potential titlists. While she has the talent to win, she does lack the big weapon and that in the overall scheme of things that will hurt her chances.

Pre tourney Odds: 40/1 Paddy Power!

Serena Williams (USA)

S Williams

Serena has won here twice before (2002, 2003), with her first win coming part of her “Serena Slam.” Recently though, at times, Serena has looked lost out on the court. She absolutely cannot give her opponents any signal that she is feeling this way during her matches here. She needs to display the confidence that has made her an eight-time Grand Slam champion, and if she does that her chances here are very good.

Pre tourney Odds: 4/1 Paddy Power!

Venus Williams (USA)

V Williams

To put it bluntly, Venus has had a $@!& year. She has a 14-7 record and has yet to win a title or even reach a final. Winning this event last year was a surprise to everyone, and if she is to repeat she better get her act together quickly. For some reason, Venus makes way too many errors on easy shots from the forehand side. She needs to play the percentages, come into the net, and not go for the lines so much. If she does these things, and is able to cut down on her errors, she will be around at the end.

Pre tourney Odds: 5/1 Paddy Power!

Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)

Chakvetadze

Chakvetadze has yet to really breakthrough at a Grand Slam, especially at Wimbledon. She is coming off a second round loss at the French Open, and so far in 2008 her results have been inconsistent. She can become ill-tempered at times which has a negative effect on her game. She must stay positive throughout the tournament. There are going to be ups and downs, and it is the player that can best negotiate through them that will be standing last.

Pre tourney Odds: 50/1 Paddy Power!

Dinara Safina (RUS)

Safina

Most pundits were very impressed by the way Safina handled herself in the finals at the French Open. She was composed, competed well, and played a very high level of tennis against Ivanovic. With that being said, she is now going to be considered one of the favorites and is going to have to live up to that billing. How will she react now that she is in the top 10? We will have to wait and see.

Pre tourney Odds: 18/1 Paddy Power!

Daniela Hantuchova (SVK)

Hantuchova

Hantuchova hasn’t played since Amelia Island due to injuries, which is never a good thing heading into a Grand Slam. Back in 2002 she reached the quarterfinals here, and the last two years she has been to the fourth round. If she is feeling healthy she has a good shot at reaching the second week, if not she will have a rough time.

Pre tourney Odds: 80/1 Paddy Power!

Wimbledon 2008
Pinstickers Guide
Top ten mens seeded

Roger Federer (SUI)

Federer

No matter how much Federer is able to block out his 2008 results to date, its certain he knows the entire tennis world is wondering if he is still the best of the best. There is no question that he still has every shot in the book (especially on grass), but recently, there has been chatter that he has lost some of that “fear factor” from other players. In fact, some of them want to play him! That said, if he can just take the tourney one match at a time and not 'over-think' things, he is still the man to beat here.

Pre tourney Odds: 11/10 Paddy Power!

Raphael Nadal (Esp)

Nadal

Nadal doesn’t want to be solely labeled the best clay-courter ever; he wants to be #1 in the world and winning on all surfaces. Forget about what people said, that he should have beaten Federer in last year’s Wimbledon final. Last year is over, and he needs to focus on the here and now. Nadal’s confidence has never been higher, and his chances of winning this title have never been better.

Pre tourney Odds: 9/4 Paddy Power!

Novak Djokovic (SRB)

Djokovic

Djokovic has just lost to Nadal in the finals at Queen’s Club, but he did jump out to an early lead showing that he is capable of competing. He cannot make unforced errors on crucial points, and he must win a high percentage of break points. You couldn’t necessarily call him the favorite, but you couldn’t totally discount him either. If he gets hot, watch out!

Pre tourney Odds: 4/1 Paddy Power!

Nikolay Davydenko (RUS)

Davydenko

Last year was Davydenko’s best showing at Wimbledon, as he had previously never been past the second round. For a player of his caliber, you would think that he would have better results here but perhaps the grass doesn’t suit him too well. His 2007 result was a better indication of how he can perform here than his previous appearances. Don't be surprised at all to see Davydenko’s name around in the second week.

Pre tourney Odds: 150/1 Paddy Power!

David Ferrer (AUS)

Ferrer

Ferrer reached the fourth round back in 2006, but like Davydenko hadn’t been past the second round in his other appearances. We know how good Ferrer is on clay, but don’t forget he did reach the semis at the 2007 US Open and the quarters at the 2006 Aussie Open, so he can play on a faster surface as well. His results will depend on how his draw looks, because if he gets a good grass-court player early on he could be in trouble.

Pre tourney Odds: 150/1 Paddy Power!

Andy Roddick (USA)

Roddick

Roddick is a two-time finalist here, with both of those losses coming to Roger Federer. He is coming off of a shoulder injury that held him out of the French Open, but played pretty well at Queen’s Club before losing to Nadal in the semis. If his shoulder holds up, he is a threat to reach the finals, but if it’s hurting that could be a big problem.

Pre tourney Odds: 25/1 Paddy Power!

David Nalbandian (ARG)

Nalbandian

Nalbandian reached the finals back in 2002, which seems like an eternity ago in tennis years. He just got to the semis at Queen’s Club, and beat Gasquet in the quarters before falling to Djokovic fairly easily. This entire year has been a roller coaster for Nalbandian, but he always seems to come up big when you least expect it (see 2007 Madrid and Paris). Translation: Don’t count him out just yet.

Pre tourney Odds: 50/1 Paddy Power!

Richard Gasquet (FRA)

Gasquet

We all remember the match that Gasquet and Roddick had from last year’s Wimbledon. This year it may be a different story for the Frenchman if he isn’t 100% healthy. Injuries have been the biggest problem for Gasquet this year, as they caused him to miss much of the clay-court season. He did play well at Queen’s Club, reaching the quarters, but that is his only quarterfinal appearance at any tournament in 2008.

Pre tourney Odds: 50/1 Paddy Power!

James Blake (USA)

He has never really had the greatest success at Wimbledon, but the faster courts do suit him pretty well. With that being said, he needs to forget the past and wipe the slate clean. It would be great for American tennis to see him still playing come the second week, but he is going to need to have everything working for that to happen. Stepping stone to the US open.

Pre tourney Odds: 200/1 Paddy Power!

Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)

Baghdatis

Baghdatis was the biggest beneficiary of the Wimbledon seedings, as he is seeded 10th but ranked 25th in the world. This is for good reason though, because he reached the semis back in 2006 and was a quarterfinalist in 2007. He has been battling injuries and inconsistency all season, and comes into the tournament with just 19 singles matches under his belt in 2008. Needless to say, he needs a good tournament.

Pre tourney Odds: 100/1 Paddy Power!
